Aromatherapy In Ancient Egypt

Aromatherapy (“scent-treatment”) is alternative form of medicine that uses the holistic approach to heal. Main healing agents are the essential oils extracted from plants that can act both psychologically and physiologically.

There are a number of ways that these techniques can be administered. More on this in the Essential Oils.  The object is to relax the mind and body; to stimulate body’s’ own defense mechanisms.

“A Healthy Mind Is A Healthy Body”.

Origins of aromatherapy can be traced back at least some 6,000 years ago. Ancient Egyptians recognized the powerful therapeutic powers of essential oils. The Aromatic Medicine itself emerged from the hues of smoky temples during this era. Essential oils were used for its medicinal, fragrance and spiritual divinity.

The precious herbs came from all corners of the known world during this barter and trade era. Caravans loaded with cedar from Lebanon, roses from Syria and boat loads of frankincense,  myrrh and spikenard from Babylon, Somalia  and as far as India and Persia were all headed for Egypt.

In the temples, the priests oversaw the time-consuming preparations.  The students continued to mix, pulverize and macerate the ingredients for several months, until the right fragrance was suitable for ceremonial manifestation.

Spiritual enhancement was not the only usage that emerged from this era. Egyptians affiliated great importance to health and hygiene. They were throughly knowledgable of the effects that fragrances and aromatic oils have on physical and psychological development.

The ” Holistic healing” power of Kephi, for example, was used as a perfume. It is a well-known antiseptic which was used extensively. If taken internally it is a powerful sedative with calming effect.

Egyptians perfected the art of massage with extensive usage of aromatic oils. They were specialists in skin care and cosmetology. Their products were envy of the civilized world. Merchants exported their rich creams, aromatic wines and scented oils all over Arabic peninsula and Mediterrenean world. This  brought great fame and wealth to Egypt.

Far East, particularly China, has a long tradition  of aromatherapy. The balance in nature , the “Yin and Yang”, is often achieved with aromatheapy.

The oils that are extracted from flowers of some plants and the leaves of others link two very potent forces necessary to get this balance: The physical healing powers of the aromatic oils and the “divine ” influence on all of human senses.

Aromatherapy  and the use of  essential oils are very effective way to treat depression and anxiety.

The aromatics  act on  nerves in the olfactory organs. They are directly linked to the part of the brain that is responsible for our emotions.

Essential oils also stimulate dendrites on the skin surface. Their action passes along the nervous system and eventually reaches the pituitary gland. Pituitary gland regulates other glands in our body including the adrenal glands which regulate our relaxation response and stress.
