Vitamins are organic compounds that are one of the main components of our enzyme system. These micronutrients energize and regulate our metabolism, essential for normal functioning of our bodies. Lack of even just one vitamin  can run havoc throughout the whole body

Vitamins are generally divided into two categories: water-soluble and fat soluble.

Water Soluble Vitamins are coenzymes needed in our metabolism  easily excreted by kidnies. Because they are water-soluble they can not be stored, a complete turnover occurs within days. Since our body is continuously metabolizing, there is the constant need to replenish these water-soluble vitamins.

Fat Soluble Vitamins are not soluble in water and they must be processed through enzymatic conversion before they can be excreted by kidneys.  They are fewer than the water-soluble vitamins and are not needed immediately. Fat soluble vitamins are generally stored in fatty tissue.

Vitamins, like minerals, do not themselves provide energy. The macronutrients, like carbohydrates, fat and protein, do that, but only when there are enough micronutrients to release them through enzymatic conversion.

Surprisingly enough, lot of people have the misconception that the vitamins can replace food and stay healthy. This is very dangerous. Vitamins are not substitute for nutrients such as protein,  fats, carbohydrates or minerals. To be healthy and more importantly to stay healthy,  proper balance of all the key ingredients must be achieved.

Providing you do not already have particular vitamin deficiency, majority of the vitamins necessary for healthy body can be consumed by eating proper food. Variety of fresh, organic food will supply the abundance of necessary micro nutrients.

Far too often people are taking a vitamin supplements in form of pills, powders, gels, liquid… even though a healthy serving of fruit, vegetables or herbs will be more than sufficient.  Not only do they offer the necessary vitamins and minerals, they also give all of the other goodies that you can not find elsewhere.

On the other hand, when you take pills, time-release tablets, powders and so on, you will be getting much more than you may want, as I will explain shortly.

When I graduated in Chemical Engineering Technology, my first job was with major pharmaceutical company producing vitamins, minerals, lotions, gels and so on.  I started as a quality control chemist and soon after was promoted to a supervisor in mixing/blending and tableting departments. We were making all the vitamins and chelated minerals being sold throughout the world.

As with any business corporate profits were the number one priority. Synthetic vitamins, although within government regulations, were used wherever possible to cut cost.  Synthetic vitamins are no match to naturally derived vitamins even though their chemical structures are the same.

Second , and more importantly, these synthesized vitamins are loaded with binders, fillers. preservatives and coatings that are necessary for manufacturing. These additives are, at least just a nuisance, and in some cases even toxic to the human digestive track if taken in large enough quantities. The active ingredients, in some cases were only10%-20%.

With these type of companies, the marketing campaigns are extremely well designed and effective. They act on human subconscious and selectively choose the scientific facts to overemphasize the benefits of a particular vitamin or mineral. They are all within legal limits, but by far do not tell the whole story.

If at all possible, I highly recommend eating well and choosing Natural Organically Grown Food. Better yet grow your own Natural Organic Herbs as there is no substitute!
